Respected and Dear Faculty Members, Colleagues, Friends and Students,
Seasons’ Greetings to all of you from the Pink City of India, Jaipur! It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that the Second International Conference of Basic and Applied Physiology is being hosted by the Department of Physiology at S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur (Rajasthan), India. It is indeed an honour and privilege to be host to such an august occasion, wherein we seek active participation from Medical Physiologists from all over the nation and across the globe.
The theme of the present conference is to seek and explore the ever-changing fluid frontiers of Medical Physiology and to delve on recent advances and their applications to quality medical education and patient care. The proposed academic and scientific conglomeration scheduled on December 21 and 22, 2013 would give the right impetus and nidus to the evolving realms of Medical Physiology and give us an opportunity to address new horizons. The time for introspection has come making the speciality of Medical Physiology more transparent, more accountable to the needs of the society and vibrant!
With time down the line the specialty of Medical Physiology degenerated to chalk and board and laboratory practices side-tracking quality medical education and patient care in the process. Subsequently, the number of medical graduates opting for Medical Physiology as their postgraduate career started declining and consequently the corridors of Medical Physiology became bereft of good dedicated professionals who could act as torch-bearers to their clinical counterparts.
The time has come when we, Medical Physiologists, need to think and look for a paradigm shift being sensitive to the demands of the society. Syllabi for the students both at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Medical Physiology need to be so structured in a way that the students also experience and learn the basic principles in health and disease as it is simpler to appreciate these basic tenets in patients and various disease forms. Questions regarding better patient-care arise at the bed-sides which need to be addressed in entirety. The journey of the Medical Physiologist begins from the bed-side and evolves through the arduous and elusive answer-seeking path(s) which could traverse various idyllic tracks and meadows. The journey becomes interesting when the answers so sought give a rationale and comprehensive management protocol to the disease in question.
Keeping the above issues in mind, the Hon’ble President of International Society of Basic and Applied Physiology (ISBAP), Professor (Dr.) J. M. Jadeja gave the onus to us to organize such an august exposition scheduled on December 21 and 22, 2013. A whole-hearted and complete cooperation from your side is humbly solicited, wherein necessary input and feedback from your side would indeed go a long way in sculpting and etching the finer details and appreciation of Medical Physiology. The training program of Medical Physiology, both at undergraduate and postgraduate, needs to be structured in such way that it caters to the needs of the society and the Specialists are able to meet the exacting standards and demands of time.
The last date of registration is August 31, 2013 and it is humbly requested that early registration of the delegates be made as the actual numbers of the participants and delegates need to be appreciated for the needful. This would also help us in our endeavor to seek for extra-mural support from government/semi-government organizations.
The Pre-conference Workshop schedule has been reorganized with Four Workshop modules planned on December 19 and 20, 2013, with two parallel sessions designed for a single day. The workshops would address various elusive and salient issues of Variability Pattern in Heart Rate, Electro-Physiology, Sleep Physiology and Stressor/De-Stressor Physiology with live-demonstration and hands-on experience.
You are requested to motivate your faculty members, junior colleagues, postgraduate students and others interested in the fascinating frontiers of Medical Physiology to send in their articles for presentation and/or publication in the International Journal of Basic and Applied Physiology.
Hoping in earnest for an expedient action and contribution from your side to make the upcoming event a success,
Professor (Dr.) Amitabh Dube
The Chairperson, ICON - BAP, 2013
